One month on from one of the most devastating natural disasters to ever hit the South Pacific, international aid organisation CARE has now begun distributing thousands of seeds to Vanuatu’s hardest-hit southern islands.
Bushra Aldukhainah is Humanitarian Coordinator for CARE Yemen. Her role includes leading all the humanitarian activities in Hajjah province supporting internally displaced people and host communities mainly with livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene promotion support.
When people talk about the South Pacific and countries like Vanuatu, they often use words like ‘idyllic’, ‘relaxed’ or ‘peaceful’. And yes, there are plenty of parts of the South Pacific that fit those descriptions. Yet Cyclone Pam has, for at least a little while, changed the world’s image of Vanuatu.
On World Health Day (7 April) CARE International voices its concern about the deteriorating health situation of more than 600,000 Syrian refugees living in Jordan, and calls on the international community to share the burden with the Government of Jordan.
“With Yemen being one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, the impacts on civilians could be catastrophic if the fighting continues,” said Daw Mohammed, CARE Country Director in Yemen.
Category Five Cyclone Pam hit the Pacific island nation on 13 March, affecting more than 165,000 people, damaging or destroying an estimated 15,000 homes and buildings, washing away 90 per cent of crops and leaving much of Vanuatu’s rural population without food or drinking water.
In FY2023, CARE worked around the world, contributing to saving lives, fighting poverty, and increasing social justice.
