CARE International’s history in Fiji
CARE began working in Fiji in 2016, partnering with the local organization Live & Learn Fiji after Cyclone Winston struck the country.
Cyclone Winston was the strongest storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. It affected more than 540,000 people, damaging homes, crops, and infrastructure across the islands.
CARE and Live & Learn responded quickly, providing emergency aid to affected communities. Since then, CARE has continued working with local partners to help communities prepare for disasters and cope with the growing impacts of climate change.
CARE and partners’ work in Fiji today
CARE works with local partners across Fiji to help communities prepare for disasters, protect their livelihoods, and adapt to climate change.
We focus on:
Climate
Fiji’s islands are increasingly affected by rising sea levels, stronger storms, and changing weather patterns. CARE and our partners help communities manage natural resources, protect food sources, and adapt farming and livelihoods to changing conditions.
Crisis response
We work with communities and local authorities to improve disaster preparedness. Communities take part in training and planning so they are better prepared for events such as cyclones, floods, and tsunamis.
CARE also supports national and local disaster response systems so help can reach communities quickly during emergencies.
Making the economy work for women
CARE supports communities to protect and rebuild their livelihoods after disasters. This includes helping families strengthen income opportunities and recover more quickly when crises occur.
CARE works with local organizations, community groups, and government partners to make sure programs reflect the needs of communities and support local leadership.
Focus on women and girls
Women and girls play an important role in preparing communities for disasters and responding when crises occur.
CARE works with partners such as Live & Learn Fiji, Fiji Disabled People’s Federation, Rainbow Pride Foundation, and Save the Children Fiji to support women’s participation in community decision-making and disaster preparedness.
These programs help ensure that disaster planning and response efforts reflect the needs of women and girls.
By supporting women’s leadership, CARE and our partners are helping communities across Fiji prepare for future disasters and recover more quickly when they occur.
