In a project funded by the European Union, CARE trains community activators and community coaches to spread awareness about topics such as early marriages, women empowerment, refugee rights, and also to teach children important life skills.

The Somali Girls’ Education Promotion Programme – Transition (SOMGEP-T) sought to improve learning outcomes and positive transitions for more than 50,000 children in school, and over 5,000 out-of-school girls living in remote and rural areas.

Balqees, an 18-year-old student whose family arrived in the Al-Azraq Camp in Jordan shortly after its establishment in 2016, dreams of continuing her education outside the camp against a backdrop of limited prospects for refugee students. 

Since 2008, CARE and Cargill's 34 joint projects in 13 countries have reached more than 4.6 million people, 600,000 people directly and 4 million indirectly. More than 2.4 million of those reached are women.

Today, February 6th, the world marks International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM. With 98% of girls between the ages of 5-11 having undergone infibulation, the most brutal form, Somalia has the highest recorded cases of FGM.

Ethiopia is facing the worst drought in the last 40 years. As a result, girls are dropping out of school because they have to walk the whole day to fetch water for their families.

A recent CARE survey has shown that the drought is forcing children to quit school to support their parents in the search for food, pasture, and water.

CARE International in Zimbabwe, through the Global Affairs Canada (GAC)-funded Supporting Transition, Retention and Training for Girls (START4Girls) project, is working with local stakeholders to challenge community perceptions and build awareness around the barriers that young women face in accessing education and the role that key community members and stakeholders can play in encouraging and supporting young women to access education in the Buhera and Mutare rural districts of Zimbabwe.

First developed in 1999, the Strengthening Opportunities for Adolescent Resilience (SOAR) is a multi-country initiative working with Ministries of Education to provide accelerated education for out-of-school adolescents, particularly girls, enabling them to acquire key academic and life skills.
