On November 19th, people around the world celebrate World Toilet Day. This day aims to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge. Uwe Korus, Monitoring, Evaluation and Accountability Coordinator for CARE International, currently supports CARE Lebanon in its Syria Response.

GENEVA (November 15, 2013) — Amid extremely difficult circumstances, CARE’s emergency response teams are working around the clock and ramping up relief efforts to remote areas of the Philippines devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.

Abdulwahad is standing behind the counter of a small shop in Mafraq. Socks, shoes, blankets and scarves are hanging on rusty hat stands. Hair ties, nail polish and pens are piled in little baskets made out of bast.

When 14-year-old Khaled left his home town Dara’a in the south of Syria nine months ago, life as he knew it ceased to exist. His family house was burnt down as were most of the buildings in his village.

Ahead of International Children’s Day (November 20) CARE International voices its concern about Syrian refugee families becoming increasingly reliant on child labour to meet basic survival needs such as food and rent. According to the latest Jordanian government estimates around 30,000 Syrian children are currently working in Jordan.

The news reports really makes me cringe, when they show Filipinos as aggressive and that insecurity is the main theme. Yes, there are frequent lootings. Yes there are stores and shops being stripped bare of all items. But people are so desperate. They have lost everything.

David Gazashvili is CARE’s Emergency Team Leader managing the response to Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. David is in Ormoc, western Leyte, one of the hardest hit areas, and talks about the logistical challenges of such a massive relief operation.
