CARE fights against the Period Taboo around the world!

For millions of women and girls, having their period is more like a fight for their dignity than a natural cycle. Dropping out of school, health risks, social exclusion, they suffer the consequences of a taboo that must be broken. In 90 countries around the world, CARE acts on a daily basis to change social norms and allow women to have their period with dignity. Here is a couple of our actions!

 

Encouraging girls to dream big

Gajadharpur is a quiet village tucked between densely populated Baharaich city and busy town of Kaiserganj. The village home to about 3,000 people. 13-year-old Ranjani Gupta is one of them.

 

Beirut Blast: 6 months on and still burying the dead

“With the money I received, I bought a tomb in the cemetery for my son. I had never thought of it before. I did not know also that it costs 5,000 US dollars!” says 65-year-old Hayat Abou Chakra showing a picture of the marble tombstone she had made for her son Chady who was 38 years old and died in the Beirut Blast, on 4th August 2020.

 

Iraq: Back to the roots

More than six years ago, hundreds of thousands of people fled from the Sinjar mountains when armed groups attacked the region. At the peak of the crisis, more than 6 million people were living in camps and host communities across Northern Iraq. Four years after military operations ended, many families finally made their way back home to Sinjar and hope to restore their lives.
