From failed rains that have led to the loss of water for drinking and farming to swarms of locusts that decimated farms and pastures, millions of people have been left hungry and thirsty. Thousands more have been displaced from their homes as they search for food and water for sustenance.
Some of the colleagues who most inspire us are those who constantly push further, who try to change the whole system, unsatisfied with smaller-scale change alone. CARE International recently lost a colleague in Bangladesh who did just that, Dr Jahangir Hossain, CARE Bangladesh’s Health Program Director - or Jahangir Bhai as he was affectionately known by his many colleagues and friends, in Bangladesh and around the world.
The Epidemic Control and Reinforcement of Health Services (ECRHS) Program operated in Sierra Leone from 2015 to 2018 with $11.6 million in support from Germany’s Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW).
The Strengthening Livelihoods through Community Adaptation and Learning project operated in West Bank and Gaza from 2014 to 2017. It was funded with $4.1 million through the German Ministry of Development (BMZ), and reached more than 11,600 people directly and 7,800 indirectly. CARE partnered with the Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem.
Yemen’s Emergency Assistance for Vulnerable and Conflict-Affected Communities ran from 2017-2018 with $10 million from USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance. It reached 242,000 people directly, and 128,000 indirectly.
