Nepal’s Prime Minister, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai congratulated CARE Nepal’s Country Director at an event organized in the Prime Miniister’s home district of Gorkha. The premier lauded CARE Nepal for its contributions to the overall development of the Manakamana Village Development Committee (VDC), Gorkha. Highlighting the importance of assistance from non-government agencies such as CARE in carrying out development efforts such as the provision of access to safe drinking water, sanitation and irrigation, the Prime Minister remarked the government could not carry out such development efforts alone. CARE has been working in Gorkha for over 20 years and has implemented various projects that improve sanitation and provide essential infrastructure such as health posts, schools, bridges and foot trails. CARE is currently implementing a Community Support Program (CSP) in the district. The event was organized to raise awareness and improve sanitation in the area. The lack of basic sanitation facilities causes the death of 13,000 children below the age of five in Nepal and CARE supports Nepal’s goal to achieve basic sanitation by 2017. CARE promotes community-led sanitation and has been successful in eliminating open defecation from several areas.
