Ukraine: Poltava attack highlights the critical need for civilian protection

Statement following the attack in Poltava by CARE Ukraine Deputy Country Director, Franziska Jörns:

"CARE is shocked by the devastating new attack on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, which has tragically claimed the lives of 49 people and left more than 210 injured. Among the destroyed structures are a hospital, an educational institution and residential buildings, highlighting once again the grave dangers faced by civilians, including children, in this ongoing war.

While CARE's activities and staff were not directly impacted, this attack underscores the growing need for increased humanitarian support and to reiterate the obligations of belligerents to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure as enshrined in international humanitarian law. CARE and humanitarian partners, including our local partners, are closely monitoring the situation to assess the evolving needs on the ground and to ensure that our response remains swift and effective.

Providing timely relief can safely reach affected people, particularly the most vulnerable groups, including women and girls, children and elderly people, is our utmost priority. We urge all parties of the conflict to strictly adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, ensuring the protection of civilians and respecting the principles of humanity, proportionality, distinction, and military necessity. As the situation continues to escalate, the need for coordinated international efforts to safeguard and support those affected has never been more critical. 

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic attack. We stand in solidarity with all those affected."
