Statement following the attack on Lviv by CARE Ukraine Deputy Country Director, Franziska Jörns:
"Since the beginning of September, daily attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure have intensified, causing significant damage and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. As a result of this morning's shelling in Lviv, far from the front line, 53 people were hospitalized, 11 of whom are in critical condition. Seven tragically lost their lives, including three children. More than 70 residential buildings were severely damaged.
A similar situation is unfolding in other cities. Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Kyiv, Dnipro and other cities suffer from daily shelling, affecting both civilian and critical infrastructure, creating new humanitarian challenges, especially with the approaching cold weather.
"The destruction of essential infrastructure threatens to leave communities without access to energy sources for heating and cooking, and clean water, increasing risks for the most vulnerable groups, especially for women and girls."Franziska Jörns, CARE Ukraine Deputy Country Director
Alongside the escalation of military actions on the eastern front, which has caused a new wave of internal displacement, this has further worsened an already dire humanitarian situation.
"The need for coordinated international support has never been more urgent."Franziska Jörns, CARE Ukraine Deputy Country Director
CARE strongly condemns these egregious violations of international humanitarian law, which are causing unacceptable suffering and eroding the foundations of international norms established to safeguard human life during war."
