Statement on devastating floods in Nepal by CARE Nepal Country Director, Mona Sherpa:
"Since 26 September heavy rains in Nepal have caused widespread devastation across many parts of the country, with Kathmandu Valley being hit the hardest. According to an initial assessment in the Valley by Nepal Mahila Ekata Samaj (NMES), a member of the Humanitarian Partnership Platform (HPP) and a women-led organization, around 2,150 households in informal settlements, home to 7,686 people, have been severely affected. Over 100 casualties have been reported nationwide.
"During disasters, women and girls are often the most vulnerable, and this is especially true in the ongoing floods."Mona Sherpa, CARE Nepal Country Director
During disasters, women and girls are often the most vulnerable, and this is especially true in the ongoing floods. Families have lost their homes and belongings and urgently need life-saving assistance. CARE Nepal plans to distribute essential immediate relief supplies, including shelter, water, hygiene and personal care items, and ready-to-eat and cook foods with nutritional values, to meet the immediate needs of the most affected. Our teams are working closely with local governments, partners, and communities to assess needs and are ready to provide immediate relief as humanitarian needs rise."
