There is no doubt that we have all been deeply disturbed by the events in Beirut and Paris this last week. That said, our response must be clear-eyed and consistent with the values of societies where the absolute respect for all human life and dignity is not modulated by ideology or prejudice pertaining to culture or religion.
As one Syrian woman living in Jordan told us: “I feel like those who did these attacks in Paris are destroying the future for everyone, including Syrians. I hope people realise it is not the fault of refugees; the very place we are seeking safety has been made unsafe – and this is all part of their plan”.
We must resist those calling for compromises on fundamental humanitarian principles. We must continue to defend the rights of all people to live in peace and security anywhere in the world and, when humanity requires, provide assistance and sanctuary to those fleeing the very same violence inflicted on those in Paris and Beirut.
