CARE responds to devastating quake in Haiti

CARE International has launched an emergency operation to provide assistance to the people of Haiti, hit by a dramatic earthquake on Tuesday, January 12th. According to the latest estimates, more than 3.7 million people are in need of assistance. The Haitian government (as of 10 February) reports that 212,000 people are dead, 300,000 are injured, and 1.2 million are displaced from their homes and communities.

To this end, CARE has launched a $40 million appeal for a five-year emergency relief and rehabilitation programme for the affected population. Read more about CARE's Haiti Earthquake Response.

As of 24 February 2010, CARE had reached more than 241,000 people with distributions of food, PUR® water purification packets, water, jerry cans, hygiene kits, shelter kits, mattresses, blankets, newborn kits and clean delivery kits. CARE has 133 staff already working in Haiti, with extensive experience responding to disasters. CARE began operating in Haiti in 1954 to provide relief assistance after Hurricane Hazel.
